Wild Black Berry, Spinach & Cacao Smoothie

Yesterday I was walking with a friend of mine through a local field, pondering the landscape, to be lucky enough to stumble across a huge amount of fruiting wild black berry bushes, instantly had to urge to create something using these berries. so the next day I set out, camera in hand and a little cane basket ready to start picking.

As the day rose so did the low setting clouds off the peaks of the mountains like a swift flick of a paint brush, the soil was very damp and squishy from the overnight rain covering my boots with mud, I'm very surprised I didn't fall over, but the reward was worth every minute.

The hill side flooding with flowering yellow daises, the surrounding bush land feeling lush and vibrant, dancing in the cold swept winds from the valley below.

I was able to grab a fair amount and freeze them even though me and my friend ate most of them the day before.       

When I finally got home and dried off form getting soaked and scratched up by the berry bushes, strange enough I was craving something sweet and tangy with a bit of health.

Thus the wild black berry, spinach and cacao smoothie was born.

Wild berry smoothie:

Ingredients

  • 1 1-2 cups black berries frozen or fresh
  • 1/2 cup coconut water or almond milk
  • 1 good handful of spinach or kale
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • 2 tsp maple syrup

Method

after picking your berries wash and rinse them in cold water if freezing place in a zip lock bag or air tight container and freeze for later use, place all your ingredients in a blender starting with your berries, then water or milk, followed by spinach, cacao powder and finish with your maple syrup. blend until everything is combined and pour into a serving glass or jar and enjoy.
